The Seek Your Truth podcast welcomes Oladotun "Ola" Idowu, the CEO and founder of Sisters in Media. Her day job is managing entertainment partnerships at Twitter. She has been included in the Forbes 30 Under 30 Media category of 2022. Ola shares what it’s like being in the tech industry and how she stays anchored in her faith.

Sisters In Media

When she was just starting out, Ola remembers that she didn’t have any Black female mentors she could look up to in her field. This lack of representation inspired her to start Sisters In Media. Initially, it started out as a simple brunch for women in media. Overtime, it’s become an organization that seeks to help women of color develop careers in media through programs, partnerships, and events.

How do you stay anchored in your faith?

Ola has been a follower of Christ since middle school. At first, she admits her faith was motivated by fear. Eventually, she was able to establish a real relationship of love with God. Just last year, she suffered a mental breakdown. It’s in these moments of weakness and suffering that we must hold on to the Holy Spirit even more. Without challenges, there can be no growth. Through the years, your relationship with God will help you to remain steadfast. It’s never just one thing; it’s a continuous journey with Him.

Advice for Women in Tech and Entrepreneurship

Leverage the people in your network. Ask them how they started their business or how they landed their job in tech. Talk to the same people they did and do what you can to learn.

Building a business or career from scratch seems intimidating. The first step is always the hardest one to take. To start, write out your personal mission statement. Once you’ve done that, you can buy the domain name for your company. Next, make your website. Start with one thing at a time. It’ll be easier to make progress once you get the ball rolling.
